About Positively Wellington Tourism

Once upon a time in November 1997 a regional tourism organisation for Wellington was born. In the past decade, Positively Wellington Tourism (PWT) has overseen a growth of over 60% in commercial guest nights in the best little capital in the world. Tourism now accounts for about 10% of Wellington’s regional domestic product.

Promoting the best little capital in the world

The PWT Team

We position Wellington as New Zealand’s ultimate urban destination; our capital of cool if you will. We didn’t make that up because we’re snazzy marketing types. It’s true. People other than us say so all the time.

Partnership

Wellington’s success as a destination lies in its partnerships. PWT is a not-for-profit council controlled organisation funded by the Downtown Levy, a targeted rate paid by commercial property owners in the Wellington CBD. The city’s investment is then enhanced by project-based partnerships with surrounding regions and tourism businesses. In 2010 we also gained central government funding towards our regional campaign in Australia.  Find out how you can work with us.

Research enables us to analyse where we’ve been, what’s worked and make informed decisions on where we need to go. And how to get there. Positively Wellington Tourism uses Ministry of Tourism research, as well as carrying out our own regular monitors. See the latest results.

Wellington Visitor Strategy cover

We’d rather do than ponder, but we manage to put our thoughts down on paper sometimes; like this one time when we wrote the Wellington Visitor Strategy 2015.

We ticked plenty of boxes in the first year since launching this fine piece of literature despite the global economy balls up. So we compiled a wee calendar of achievements to celebrate.
