New Zealanders made almost 2.8 million overnight visits to Wellington region in 2011 (YE March). Almost three quarters of these visits were for holiday or to visit friends and family, while the rest were for business or other reasons. (Source: Domestic Travel Survey, Ministry of Tourism)

Australia is Wellington's largest international visitor market and the launch of the There's No Place Like Wellington campaign in March 2010 has driven exceptional growth. In the 19 months since the campaign launched in Sydney, Australian arrivals have increased 20%. The growth rate for the same 19 month period prior was just over half that. In the year to October 2011, Wellington saw 14% more Australians arrive direct into the city - over six times the national growth rate of 2%. (Source: International Visitor Arrivals)
Inner city hotel capacity has grown in line with demand. From 2001-2010, hotel beds in Wellington city increased by 50%. Occupancy rates have stayed fairly level - sitting at around 67% - but evening out right across the week. Dollars taken by the 19 hotels in Positively Wellington Tourism’s hotel monitor was over $100 million in 2010. This compares with 15 hotels taking in just over $37 million in 2002; an increase of 170%.
In the 10 years to the end of 2010, commercial guest nights in the city increased by 52% to just under 2 million. Domestic guest nights increased 68% to 1.3 million, while our international friends spent 29% more nights in the city’s commercial accommodation. (Source: Commercial Accommodation Monitor)
