Hutt Valley

Some of Wellington region's best-kept secrets can be found in the Hutt Valley, New Zealand’s first organised settlement. The area has an ancient history that includes Maori mythology of taniwha and stories that show the area as a place of national and international importance. Also in the Hutt Valley are some of the region’s best art galleries, cafes, and seaside communities to enjoy.

For the nature lovers, there’s also a network of forest trails just waiting to be explored throughout the Valley. Discover stories of innovation, enjoy nature experiences, excellent shopping and cultural history in this unique part of the Wellington region.

 Top ten

  1. Don’t miss the historical and trendy cafes, galleries and unique retailers of Jackson Street, Petone.
  2. Take the ferry across Wellington harbour to the upmarket Eastern Bay villages; with a stop on the nature reserve of Matiu/Somes Island.
  3. Hire a bike to explore the 28 kilometres of Hutt River trail or the beautiful coast road out to historic Pencarrow Head.
  4. The view across the harbour to Wellington, or up the valley from a Hutt City hilltop can’t be beaten. There’s a track for every fitness level, pack your lunch and make a day of it!
  5. Sublime rural, suburban and bush gardens are open to view on easy self-guided garden rambles of the Hutt Valley
  6. Quad Bike Expeditions take you deep to the Turakirae Head seal colony or into the hills and river valleys which extend inland from the rugged south coast.
  7. Check out cutting-edge art at The Dowse Art Museum, a local contemporary gallery of national significance with world-class exhibits.
  8. Be sure to visit Te Puna Wai Ora to fill your water bottle with pure artesian water from the spring of life.
  9. Contemporary and traditional Maori art are produced on a real working Marae at Maori Treasures; there are no staged performances here!
  10. Enjoy our region’s natural treasures at Staglands Wildlife Reserve, offering a special look at New Zealand’s wildlife, heritage and beauty.
