Enjoy individual attention in the tranquil setting of Wellington's Botanic Gardens at Carter Observatory. Within 5 minutes walk of the CBD, located at the top of Wellington's iconic Cable Car, guests can enjoy natural light, amazing views, and a unique atmosphere - all set in a world-class visitor attraction dedicated to celebrating the stories of the Southern Skies.

Carter's spaces can accommodate groups of up to 160. They offer in-built display technology, multiple breakout spaces, and the region's only digital full-dome theatre where guests can present and dine under the stars - and they can guarantee a starry sky!

Types of rooms available at Carter Observatory

OMV Exploration Room

A large, airy, L-shaped room with natural light, looking out over the beautiful Botanic Garden. All bookings include access to Carter's multimedia exhibition. Optional breakout spaces and Planetarium sessions available by prior arrangement.

Pelorus Trust Planetarium

Carter Observatory offers a dining experience unique in New Zealand where guests can enjoy a tour of the night sky between dinner and dessert. Domed theatre with full-dome digital projection system. This space offers fly-through tours of the night sky, or the option to show digital animation in a wrap-around format on the hemispherical screen.

State-of-the-art variable lighting and sound system available. Bespoke shows and inclusion of specific material (eg: company promos, logos etc) by prior arrangement.

Aurora Room

Looks out over Wellington and the Botanic Garden. Offers access to power, phone, white board and video projection. Offered as a small breakout space or exclusive hire.

Cooke Telescope Dome

'An evening with the stars' gives you the exclusive use of the Telescope Dome for either a seated dining experience or a cocktail function. A Carter astronomer will take guests on a tour of the southern night sky using the historic Cooke Refractor Telescope.

This option is weather dependant and will be replaced by a Planetarium show if required.
