The ultimate Middle-earth experience

2 - 3 days | $$

Wellington is a city where the magic of movie-making comes to life. Our 2 – 3 day itinerary will help you get the best out of your visit to Wellington, the Middle of Middle-earth.

Some of the world's most spectacular movies are made right here in the coolest little capital. Think The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Avatar, King Kong, and The Adventures of Tin Tin.

We've also hosted two world premieres - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - and as Sir Peter Jackson put it: “nowhere else in the world does a premiere quite like Wellington."

While much of Wellington’s role lies in production studios and digital effects, there are a number of ways visitors can experience the city’s world class film industry.

While you’re here also check out stores Zambesi, Robyn Mathieson and Voon for womenswear, as well as Hema facial products, which were all popular with Liv Tyler.

Lyall Bay was where Billy Boyd (Pippin) and Viggo Mortensen learned to surf and it also happens to be home to one of Wellington’s best cafes – Maranui Café.

Logan Brown was a favourite for Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Liv Tyler, and Foxglove hosted the post-premiere party for The Lovely Bones in 2009.

If you have more time, venture further north to Kaitoke Regional Park, which was used as the setting for Rivendell.
