Eat Indian style

Feeling hot, hot, hot! From generously spicy to conservatively mild, fill your belly with some of the best Indian cuisine in town. Here are some of the top spots to dine-in or takeaway, Indian style.

Taste of India

Don't be fooled by its humble facade, local reviewers consider Taste of India the best of its kind in Wellington. Although there's nowhere to dine-in, you can actually watch as they make your freshly made naan in their clay oven. We recommend you give their cheesy naan a go.

Great India

The poppadoms and chutneys Great India serve to start are a key ingredient to their customer satisfaction. Their North Indian cuisine is authentic and flavoursome - while portion sizes remain generous. You can pop in for a dine-in experience (BYO wine and beer), or have your meal takeaway with a delivery option available.

Planet Spice

"The best curry to ever touch my lips", says one Zomato reviewer. If you're a Newtown local there's a very high chance you've had the pleasure of tasting Planet Spice's delicious curry. The service is almost always quick and friendly and kitchen staff go the extra mile to get the spice factor spot on. Yup - the food is absolutely divine.

Higher Taste

Underneath Old Bank Arcade in the city lies Higher Taste, a Hare Krishna restaurant serving pure vegetarian food nourishing the body and soul. Their Indian selection is definitely worth mentioning, plus the fact that if you're dining in, pay a standard charge for your plate size and then pile it up with deliciousness!

Masala Cafe & Bar

This busy Allen Street restaurant is open for lunch and dinner (BYO wine), plus they do takeaway AND delivery. They can easily cater for large groups, but booking is most certainly recommended. This place gets busy - probably due to their delicious butter chicken, word on the street is it's pretty darn good.

Little India

With a huge variety of Indian cuisine, Little India knows exactly how to cater to different folk's spice preferences, whether you like your curry eye-watering hot, or as mild as possible. Their Blair Street establishment is the big brother to the smaller and cosy Cuba Street restaurant, but if you're taking a big group along, Blair Street is the way to go. Plus, you can also order anything on the menu to takeaway.

Indus Restaurant

Sitting beneath the Shamrock Hotel in Thorndon is Indus, a fully licensed BYO Indian restaurant with a cute wee courtyard. Indus serves a wide variety of regional dishes, including all the usual suspects. We've heard the vegetarian options are just as good, and everything is prepared fresh to order.

Tulsi

Monty Patel opened Tulsi on Cuba Street in 1999. Since then he's opened Tulsi restaurants in Miramar, Johnsonville and Petone... just to name a few. If you're dining in and purchasing five or more mains, you'll get a free bottle of house wine. A great place for a casual BYO - their butter chicken is consistently good.
