Favourite fish and chip shops

Fish and chips; they're a Kiwi classic! We've got some insider tips on favourite fish and chip shops that put on an impressively good feed.

Wellington Seamarket

Wellington Seamarket on Cuba Street is pretty popular with Wellingtonians. Perhaps it's the fact you can buy from a range of fresh fish caught that morning, or it could be the generous serving of crunchy chips.

The Mt. Vic Chippery

You're the creator of your own meal at Mt. Vic Chippery. Starting with the type of fresh fish you want, choose how you'd like it cooked (grilled, battered, crumbed) and then the type of chips you prefer - the curly fries are outstanding. During peak times, it does get a bit busy but it's totally worth the wait!

Huckle & Co.

Great location, a cool fit-out and exceptional fish and chips equals happy customers! Huckle & Co. in Seatoun do this very well. We also heard the squid rings are "the best in the world", you might just have to try them out for yourself.

Seaview Takeaways

Seaview Takeaways in Lyall Bay always has a good stream people going into it (a clear indication that this place must be good). You really get your money's worth here. $6 for fish and chips for one will do just fine - and some, plus you can eat them on the beach!

Te Aro Fish Supply

Te Aro Fish Supply are well-known for their generosity in helping size. Their burgers and paua fritters are top-notch.

Thorndon Chippery

The Thorndon Chippery, little brother of The Mt. Vic Chippery, serves the same delicious menu of fresh fish and hand-cut chips (plus burgers, salads and plenty of other seafood varieties). They've drawn quite the crowd on Murphy Street, and you really can't miss it. The giant fish sculpture above the doors is a dead give away. If you can't wait during peak time, they take online orders too. Nice!

Brooklyn Fish Supply

Another hidden gem is Brooklyn Fish Supply, a Chinese takeaway and fish and chip shop in Brooklyn (obviously). Grab some delicious crumbed fish fillets and head to Owhiro Bay - there's a massive rock that makes a pretty good makeshift table for dinner.

Fish Fins

Newtown residents favour family business, Fish Fins on Riddiford Street. They do lightly battered fish and deliciously thick chips with a beautiful lemon pepper seasoning.
