Wellington is warming up for winter with a great selection of hearty winter fare and delicious tipples. Here's a few new capital flavours that'll keep your winter fresh.

Hidden down Forresters Laneway just off Tory Street, you’ll find Motel Bar. Seek out this tiki-themed oasis and sample their delicious new cocktail menu. Give Jungle Juice, Mr Lava Lava or Bread and Butter Daiquiri a go. They also have a whopping 70 rums behind the counter from all over the world, which are guaranteed to warm you up.

New kids on the block, Slim Davey’s, are offering half price burgers for late night diners, and they’re also looking forward to serving up their very first Burger Wellington entry, Slim Pickins, during Visa Wellington On a Plate (12 – 28 August). Watch this space.

St Johns Bar and Restaurant on the waterfront have just launched a new small plates menu that’s ideal for sharing. Try fresh seasonal dishes including Courgette Provencale, Roasted Kumara with horseradish crème fraiche, Goat Curd with chicory, beluga lentils, pickled choggia and rye croutons, or Panzanella Salad with chargrilled yellowfin tuna. Yum.

Chocolate lovers will be stoked to hear that Wellington Chocolate Factory will soon be releasing their very own decadent drinking chocolate. Pop into their Leeds St factory and try this perfect winter pick-me-up. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for more WCF goodies at the New Zealand Chocolate Festival at Te Papa, 13 – 14 August.

Warm up your winter with Logan Brown's series of tasty events. Join them from 8-9 June when jazz band Kind of Roux bring their beats to the restaurant as part of the Wellington Jazz Festival, or tuck into a hearty feast at the Beef + Lamb Ambassador series dinner on 15 June. They’ll also be bringing the heat with their famous rugby long lunch on 18 June when the All Blacks take on Wales, where you can enjoy some kiwi classics with a bit of a Welsh twist.

Hop along to Garage Project's craft beer tap room for some crafty new winter brews. Try their new harvest beers brewed with local grape juice from Martinborough. The weather might be a little cooler, but the Sauvin Nouveau, and Rosé inspired brews are a good reminder of the warmer months just past. Enjoy fresh oysters paired with these seasonal brews, alongside a changed menu inspired by the new season. Keep an eye out for other new beers, with a particular focus on special beers poured on Nitro. With a richer, fuller mouth feel, and smoother carbonation, these brews are perfect for the cooler weather.

Portlander’s new autumn/winter menu is out now. Located at Rydges Hotel, this award-winning restaurant is known for its top notch steaks and other meaty fare. Highlights from their new menu include McClure’s Frickles (fried pickles), Autumn Spatchcock with fried green tomatoes, and their exclusive Palliser Bay Station Lamb dishes.

Local favourite Pravda are excited to launch their brand new menu just in time for the colder months. Designed by Executive Chef and My Kitchen Rules judge Gareth Stewart, the menu has an array of sumptuous new dishes. Gareth's favourites include, fresh crumpets - house made ricotta, lavender honey and Auntie’s jerk chicken with cucumber and mint slaw and scotch bonnet aioli.

Make sure you swing by Moore Wilson’s and pick up some locally made Huffman’s Sauce or Baxter’s Original. Both have just won medals at the 2016 World Hot Sauce Awards. Our picks are Huffman’s Thai Sweet Chilli Aromatic Sauce, Huffman’s Spiced Bloody Mary Tomato Ketchup, and Baxter’s Spicy Bourbon BBQ Sauce.
