Where to get a great steak

A truly great steak is savoured, spoken about reverently, and remembered fondly for many years.

As New Zealand's culinary capital, all of Wellington's best restaurants will prepare you a top quality steak, but for the true aficianado, we've chosen some of the specialists who not only cook great steak, but understand steak culture.

Portlander Bar and Grill

Classy, but warm and welcoming, the Portlander's whole menu is local and seasonal with an undisguised love for quality produce that shows throughout. You'll learn all about your steak's origins (including region, breed and feed regime), making Portlander a must for carnivorous conisseurs. Plus, the quality doesn't stop with the meat - their sides, including the honey roasted beetroot and famous handcut fries, are spectacular.

Southern Cross Garden Bar Restaurant

At the other end of town, The Southern Cross is a Wellington institution. On a site that's been a bar for over 100 years, it's the personality and atmosphere of 'The Cross' that lifts it out of the ordinary. They might not have a high-priced wagyu fillet on the menu, but sitting in their courtyard as a sizzling Surf & Turf makes its way to you on a hot stone is a classic Wellington experience.

Logan Brown know all about the art of serving up a beautiful, mouthwatering steak. Their massive T bone steak is cooked to perfection; the sirloin carved and the tenderloin kept intact. Garnished with a various mustards and jus, plus buttery potatoes and fennel slaw. Best shared by 2 or 3. Hungry yet?

El Matador

A far cry from your traditional steak house, El Matador nonetheless is a meat lover's paradise. Grilling on a traditional asador wood-fired barbecue, their distinctive Argentinian beef culture comes to the fore. The signature smoky taste comes sets this style apart, and is best enjoyed with a big, dark and fruity Argentinian red. We recommend sharing a steak platter between two or three people, which shows off the El Matador taste across flank, rump, sirloin and ribeye, with traditional chimichurri salsa.
