Explore Wellington Harbour with the East By West Ferry. There are up to 16 daily scheduled ferry trips to Days Bay, including regular stops at Matiu/Somes Island - a beautiful nature reserve and historic site in the centre of the harbour, offering 360 degree views of the Wellington region.

A round-harbour Explorer Tour is also available in the weekend and calls in to Petone, Matiu/Somes Island, Days Bay and Seatoun.

Cost:

  • Adult - $11 (one way), $22 (return)
  • Child (3-15 yrs) - $6 (one-way), $12 (return)
  • Concession rates available for school groups.

Specifically tailored for school groups, the East By West Ferry now offers three tours:

Harbour Discovery Cruises

An Adventurous and fun way to explore Wellington Harbour aboard the East By West Ferry. A live on board commentary especially tailored to the children's age group reveals the harbours rich and exciting heritage.

Tour duration: 10am - 11.30am. Cost: $14pp.

The Matiu/Somes Island Experience

Explore this fascinating island steeped in local history from early Maori settlement to its more recent status as a DOC reserve. The views from all over the easy walking tracks are unsurpassed. Native bird life abounds and you may even see a residential Tuatara!

Tours depart at 10am & 12pm. Cost: $12pp.

Ship 'n Chip Tour

Combine a visit to Wellington Museum with a trip to Matiu/Somes Island and enjoy a fish and chips lunch on the waterfront.

Ship ‘n’ Chip trips begin with a programme at Wellington Museum, where students learn about the rich social history of Matiu/Somes Island, from pā site, to quarantine station, to internment camp, to wildlife sanctuary. Then it’s all aboard the ferry to independently explore the island with your class. The trip concludes with a fish ‘n’ chip lunch on Queen’s Wharf.

Cost: $20 per student and $18 per adult, plus a one-off $10 delivery fee for the fish and chips.
Time: 8:45am until 2pm.

Groups of 40 or more have the option of extending their trip to visit Petone Settlers Museum or Days Bay. The cost of the extended trip is $26 per student and $22 per adult.
