Heritage Trail: Old Shoreline - Wellington City

A trail of 14 brass plaques along the capital's original 1840 shoreline guides you through the city's history and heart of the hospitality and retail districts.

A trail of 14 brass plaques along the capital's original 1840 shoreline guides you through the city's history and heart of the hospitality and retail districts. Highlighting 150 years of history, from the infancy of the European settlement of Port Nicholson to the establishment of a modern city.

Starting at Waitangi park near Te Papa, the trail was laid in 1976 to indicate the extent of reclamation at a time when the central city area was undergoing great change.

Fittingly you'll find you end the journey near The Thistle Inn which is a Category 1 historic place building and the oldest hotel in New Zealand still trading from its orginal site.

Discover Wellington's old shoreline, before reclamation took place.

Download the Old Shoreline Heritage Trail brochure (PDF, 1.37MB) or pick on up from the Wellington i-SITE Visitor Centre
