New Zealand's only botanic garden dedicated solely to growing native plants is a window into our natural heritage. Otari-Wilton's Bush is a unique plant sanctuary and forest reserve consisting of 100 hectares of native forest and 5 hectares of plant collections. Some of Wellington's oldest trees are here, including an 800-year-old rimu.

Stroll across the 75m long canopy walkway that sits high in the tree tops, spot the abundant bird life below, and wander one of the many trails through Wellington's last piece of original forest.

Otari-Wilton's Bush is an ideal spot for school groups. Take students on the Nature Trail, a self-guided tour through the reserve. This trail is designed to introduce students to the unique vegetation and forest life that exists within the reserve, and teaches them about conservation of New Zealand's fragile native environment.

Resources for school groups and an Education Kit can be downloaded from Wellington City Council's website.

Find out what native birds you might spot on your visit to Otari-Wilton's Bush.
