The Supreme Court is the highest court in New Zealand. Established in 2004 it replaced the Privy Council in London as New Zealand's final court of appeal. It recognises New Zealand as an independent nation with its own history and traditions. To acknowledge the importance of this new court an iconic building was constructed, inspired by New Zealand's unique natural heritage.

The building shares the site with the Old High Court building that has been restored to its original ornate state when it opened in 1881.

Tours of the Supreme Court building include the historic Old High Court building. In the course of the tour students will learn how the justice system works today, the role of the Supreme Court and what the justice system was like in the late 1800's when the Old High Court building was first used.

Tours can be booked on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and take 1 hour. For students studying the legal system a longer more detailed visit can be arranged. To request a tour email tours@justice.govt.nz.
