5 reasons Wellington is the perfect winter pick me up

If the thought of winter gives you chills, we reckon a weekend in Wellington could be just the remedy. Here's a few reasons why it'll work wonders for your well-being.

1. Gorgeous new shops

There’s nothing quite like a bit of retail therapy to make you feel (and look) a million bucks. With a trail of stylish stores including Ena, Seed Heritage and Lonely now open (and David Jones on the way), Wellington has plenty of spots where you can shop for your winter wardrobe, so you’ll be sure your threads are on trend.

2. Warming winter eats

One of the best things about winter is the excuse to tuck into comfort food, and Wellington’s restaurants will be dishing up lots of belly-warming goodness this season. Buzzing new bar Slim Davey’s serves up hearty fare (think pork belly and steak with fries), with an impressive drinks menu to boot. The heated seats in Ancestral’s courtyard will keep you toasty while you enjoy their flame-grilled yakitori skewers. Or if you’re in need of a meat fix, Portlander Bar & Grill is a prime choice, offering something to please all carnivores.

3. Fresh views

While you may be tempted to lay low over the winter months, this year choose exploration over hibernation. Jump into Wellington’s outdoor playground and get a healthy dose of fresh air and fresh views. We suggest a brisk walk around the scenic waterfront or through the peaceful Botanic Garden, otherwise a hike up to the Mount Victoria lookout is guaranteed to warm you up and you’ll feel pretty stoked when you reach the top. If you’d really like to feel at one with nature, spend a day at Zealandia surrounded by local bird and plant life. Bliss.

4. Sweet treats

They say a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and we reckon it’s also the perfect cure for those pesky winter blues. Thankfully you’ll find many a sweet spot in the capital. Warm up with a decadent hot chocolate from Wellington Chocolate Factory or Scopa, or indulge in high tea at Hippopotamus or Louis Sergeant. For a late night treat, stop by The Library for dessert or pick up a hot waffle from the Little Waffle Shop. Trust us, they’re hard to resist.

5. Relaxation stations

If the winter weather has left you feeling a little gloomy, treat yourself to a little "me time", with an escape to one of Wellington’s inner-city sanctuaries for a relaxing spa treatment or pampering session. Find an oasis of calm at the beautiful East Day Spa, spoil yourself with a treatment at the bright and colourful Spring Spa, or spruce up your look with a makeover at Phoenix Cosmetics on Cuba St.
