6 reasons to plan a Wellington weekend this winter

Stuck in a rut? Might be time for a well-deserved break. Give winter the cold shoulder and escape the everyday with a weekend in Wellington filled with cosy restaurants, strong coffee, and energising events. Here's a few signs that you need a weekend away...

1. You can't face another night on the couch...

Feeling sluggish after countless nights binge-watching shows on Netflix? Never fear; Wellington’s winter events calendar is sure to get you fired up and off the couch:

  • Enter the unique and colourful world of Frida Kahlo in the Circa Theatre Production, La Casa Azul (25 June - 23 July)
  • Cosy up in one of Wellington's premium cinemas and see the best in New Zealand and world cinema at the NZ International Film Festival (22 July -  7 August)
  • Hop along to Beervana (13-14 August), a two-day celebration of all things craft beer.
  • If your preferred brew is coffee, you'll want to get yourself to Caffeination 2016 (27-28 August)
  • Last but not least, make sure you're in Wellington to cheer on our rugby champs the All Blacks, when they face their ultimate rivals Australia at Westpac Stadium on 27 August

2. You're fed up with soup for every meal...

Foodie Fun

With over 750+ restaurants, bars and cafés, including a bunch of hot new eateries and lots of legendary favourites, Wellington has all the ingredients for a gastronomic good time this winter. Tuck into warming winter meals at The Bresolin and The Hideaway or heat up with spicy street eats from the Wellington Night Market. And don’t forget the ultimate winter warmer -  culinary festival Visa Wellington On a Plate, serving up two weeks of delicious foodie events and restaurant offers (12-28 August).

3. You're getting cabin fever...

Winter waterfront

If you feel like you haven’t set foot outside in a while, blow out the cobwebs with a brisk walk around Wellington’s scenic waterfront, or power walk up Mount Victoria or Mount Kaukau for epic views. Make sure to download the Welly Walks app for more walking inspiration.  For an extra cool experience, rug up for a Zealandia Night Tour, and mingle with the wildlife after dark.

4. Your morning coffee is endured, not enjoyed…

If your daily coffee is leaving a bad taste in your mouth, perhaps it’s time for a new kind of coffee break. Enjoy a coffee-fuelled escape in Wellington, and revive your love of coffee in our cosy and colourful cafes. Beachside fave Beach Babylon serves a mean brew in retro surroundings, while Sweet Mother’s Kitchen will re-energise you with its strong coffee and colourful kitsch. Otherwise, head to Lyall Bay for a cosy cup overlooking the surf at the always buzzing Maranui.

5. You've lost your spark...

Rekindle your relationship and treat your better half to a bit of romance and quality time in the capital. For the ultimate romantic weekend, try a little wining and dining at Logan Brown or Whitebait, cosy up with a film at Lighthouse Cinema Cuba, and top it off with a night cap at The Library or Dragonfly. To make it extra special, curl up in a Deluxe Room at InterContinental Wellington (complete with fluffy bathrobes!)

6. You're feeling uninspired...

Dowse Transfer

In Wellington, winter is about exploration, not hibernation, so make the most of those cooler days and explore Wellington’s great indoors. Be inspired by the latest exhibitions at City Gallery, The Dowse Art Museum, or Nga Toi | Arts Te Papa, or browse some of Wellington’s many art galleries. Winter is the perfect time to spend a few hours marvelling at the incredible craftsmanship of Gallipoli: The scale of our war and The Great War Exhibition. Be sure to also check out Weta Workshop’s newest creation, Thunderbirds Are Go Behind-the-Scenes Experience.
