Spring into action

Days are longer, flowers are in bloom and 'Wellington on a good day' snaps are clogging up your newsfeed. It's time for us to share things to do that'll put a spring in your step!

Daylight savouring

mt vic

Springtime means daylight saving kicks in and we get a whole extra hour of daylight to play with - woohoo! Make the most of the lighter nights by heading out for some early evening adventures.

Meander up to the Mount Victoria lookout and soak up the serenity as the sun sets. Enjoy a few happy hour beverages on a beanbag in the sun at Karaka Cafe or St Johns, or grab a bites at one of these hot spots. Feeling active? Get your mates together and head around the waterfront to Oriental Bay for a competitive game of beach volleyball or cricket. Reward yourself after your win with a delicious gelato from Gelissimo

Take a stroll

SetWidth1000 Writers Walk I Love This City WCC 1118x900

When the sun is shining and it's a beautiful spring day in ol' Wellington, all you really want to do is get out there and enjoy a bit of vitamin D. Wellington is a city made for walking so make the most of the nice weather and explore.

Follow the Wellington Writers Walk around the waterfront and read the poetry cast in concrete, or take a stroll along one of Wellington's sandy beaches. Oriental Beach and Lyall Bay are favourites, and you can grab some fish n chips for a picnic dinner while you're there. Perfect!

Sunny lunch spots

Waterfront Bench

There's nothing like feasting on a delicious spread while soaking up some sun at the same time. Pack a picnic and stroll to Oriental Bay where you can enjoy your lunch from a perfectly placed park bench or on the golden sands. Wellington's Waterfront has some marvelous spots for catching a few rays of sunshine too.

Dine al fresco at one of Wellington's many outdoor eateries. Coene's Bar & Eatery, Poneke and Foxglove all provide stunning harbour views, or escape the hustle and bustle in the leafy courtyards tucked out the back of OliveSouthern Cross and Laundry.

Nature encounters

PWT Wgtn Zoo Red Panda 01 small

Spring is the perfect time to meet some of Wellington's wildlife and get some fresh air! Visit Zealandia where you can easily spend a few hours exploring the lush bush and getting close to local creatures. Keep an eye out for tuatara, and the colourful kākāriki (red-crowned parakeet).

For an encounter with animals of a slightly bigger size, take a wild ride on a Seal Coast Safari and spot New Zealand fur seals sun-bathing on the south coast beach. Or if you'd like something a bit more intimate, you can't beat a close encounter at Wellington Zoo – we recommend the red pandas.

Say it with flowers

PWT Botanic Garden Tulips Close Up 1600x630

You'll be mighty pleased to find 24,000 tulips looking bloomin' lovely in the Wellington Botanic Garden, take a guided walk of Otari-Wilton’s Bush and see the nature reserve at its best, or let your little ones' inner explorer roam at Kids Day Out.

Good old fashioned fun

Now that the sun has returned, spend the afternoon with the kids at one of Wellington’s 50 fantastic playgrounds with slides, swings, climbers and ride-ons in abundance.

Many of the best playgrounds are located next to or near cafes and gelaterias so you can sip your latte while you watch the kids run riot – you can even join in! Take a look at our list of the top playgrounds in Wellington to let off some steam with the young ones.

Afternoon delights

PWT Rogue Vagabond 920x300

As the capital of cool, it's Wellington's duty to provide awesome things to do all day long, and what better way to make the most of the late afternoon sun than by perching outside with a bite to eat or a few brews.

Enjoy a coffee in the sun in the front courtyard at Fidel's, sink into the beanbags and sip on a cold beverage at Rogue and Vagabond, pick up a gelato from Kaffee Eis and go for a waterfront wander, or make a night of it and take advantage of daily drink and dining deals

Wellington's markets

Wellington’s markets are something else. On the weekends you can indulge in artisan and gourmet foods at Moore Wilson's or the Sunday Harbourside Market, and take your taste buds on a tour around the world at the Wellington Night Market. Pick up a handmade treasure at the Wellington Underground Market and relish in the fresh spring produce at Wellington’s weekend farmers markets.

Evening adventures

If you want something a bit more hardcore, trek up Mount Victoria or Mount Kaukau. You'll be breathless for all the right reasons!
