snkr peek at a new store

By Eve 3 Dec 2015

My friends will be the first to tell you I'm not usually one for donning my running gear (unless its because I’m within sight of a desirable bar). snkr on Lambton Quay has struck the perfect balance for me. Sneakers you can wear at the pub!

snkr seems to have attained a monopoly on casual, on-trend sneakers in Wellington. Similar shoes can often be more of an afterthought at apparel stores. Not, however, for snkr. Here, sneakers are the main event. Of course, places like Foot Locker and Nike are popular destinations for ‘sneakerheads’. But such outlets tend to provide footwear appropriate for a sweat session at Les Mills. snkr is aimed more at the fashion market than the fitness fiend. They are about multipurpose footwear – which makes perfect sense! Running shoes are becoming an increasingly staple addition to any fashion forward person’s wardrobe. These days it’s not just about being active, its also about ‘doing absolutely nothing in your active wear’.

Shoes are flying off the shelves here. The unfortunate side effect for buyers is they may not have your choice in stock. Fear not! snkr are using in-store technology to theirs and your advantage. They have two iPads in the centre of the store, on which you can browse their website. You can order and buy from another store right then and there.

snkr has become a magnet for customers seeking out the latest niche shoe they have spotted online. And they make it their business to deliver. These guys stock a range of classics like Nike, Adidas, Converse, Dr Martens etc. But also have a range of very exclusive stock. Even when it comes to classic brands, snkr aim to stock their harder to find styles. A particular standout shoe for me came in the form of a PUMA/STAMPD collaboration. This beautiful beige suede and leather shoe was sourced overseas and is exclusive to snkr – one you can’t find anywhere else nationwide.

snkr have been open just two months but are already becoming a go-to in Wellington for casual shoe. Sales Assistant, Isaac, says on a good day it can get so busy that he can barely walk down the side of the store. Another testament to the stores influence is that before he started working at snkr, Isaac only knew the basics about sneakers. Since working here, he has found himself owning 21 pairs. And browsing this fabulous, eclectic collection it’s not hard to see why. But apparently his 21 pairs wouldn’t impress true sneakerheads. “Hey, that’s nothing!” One of Isaac’s regulars owns 95 pairs of sneakers (and counting, probably). Although this might be dwarfed by the couple who have a whole room in their flat dedicated to their sneaker collection... talk about dedication to the cause!

I would recommend everyone head to snkr. If you are looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, go in and have a chat to one of the staff - they're very friendly and well versed in all things sneaker. You can even pick up some niche Star Wars themed Adidas’ for your baby! If you, like myself, fall into the category of like-to-look-fit-but-perhaps-aren’t, don’t worry! There’s something for everybody. Who knows - you may soon find yourself feeding your own sneaker addiction.

If you've got a favourite spot to snap up sneakers, let me know where I should visit next in the comments below!
