  • Date: 1 Dec 2007 - 11 May 2008
  • Venue: Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
  • Adult price: $8
  • Child price: Free for children up to 14 years
  • Event types: Exhibitions

Encounter the underwater world of whales. Explore their lifestyles and amazing biology. Discover how the world of whales and people connect – in story and at sea and on land.

The exhibition presents a rich assortment of objects from Te Papa’s whale collection – one of the largest in the world. Skeletons up to 18 metres long are displayed, along with fossils, models and specimens from many whale species. Beautiful taonga (cultural treasures) made from highly-prized whale bone and whale teeth give evidence of the revered status of these animals.

Experience diving with a sperm whale pursuing a giant squid, or check out how whales use sound to hunt and to navigate. Learn how to identify individual whales. Kids, you can even try crawling through a model of a blue whale’s heart!

Whales | Tohorā is a dramatic encounter with an undersea world, and a feast of intriguing information and activity for adults and children.

See Whales Tohora for free!
Te Papa’s Whales Tohorä exhibition is free to Wellington city residents and ratepayers on Thursday 8 May (Te Papa is open until 9pm). Just bring along your rates invoice, library card or proof of address.
