One of Wellington’s true assets as a visitor destination is its nature experiences. Leading the way is the Karori Sanctuary - a living example of the conservation story in action.
Karori Sanctuary is well-known for the work it does in the area of environmentally sustainable tourism. In 2007, this work was recognised when it was first equal winner of the Urban Sustainability prize at the Green Ribbon Awards.
The Sanctuary’s story is one of a clear vision backed by community support. Eleven years ago it was a 250 hectare area of mixed vegetation, populated by introduced pests. Today, it is a world-first conservation reserve that protects native trees and animals, including the saddleback, hihi, little spotted kiwi and giant weta.
“The Karori Sanctuary is a shining example of sustainability at work in Wellington’s tourism industry,” says Positively Wellington Tourism CEO Tim Cossar. “It is an inspiration to all, and its offer will become even stronger with the development of its Visitor and Education Centre.”
The Sanctuary has also played a leadership role, working with other local tourism businesses on conservation projects. An example of this is its weta hotels (and hostel), which several Wellington accommodation providers have sponsored.
“Sustainability continues to be an important area of focus for the tourism industry,” says Tim Cossar. “Wellington’s offer will only get stronger through partnership, and the sharing of knowledge and resources.”
