The top four teams on the 2014/15 overall standings ladder will automatically qualify for Rio 2016, and with Wellington the fourth stop on the circuit, teams will be doing all they can to claim top points in the capital.

The Wellington tournament is scheduled for February 6 and 7, and fans can already register their interest for the event by joining a ticket wait list at www.sevens.co.nz.

Since the end of the 2014 tournament, the team at Sevens Wellington have been tracking towards delivering a 2015 event that will be unique to any other in its 15-year history.

While watching the All Blacks Sevens defend their title at home is attractive in itself, Sevens Wellington general manager, Marty Donoghue, said a huge amount of work had already been done to improve the fan experience.

“We have started preparations towards a brand new fan zone, which we envisage having a carnival atmosphere, great activities, great food, and hopefully some great Wellington weather.

“We have also been working with our partners to ensure we have some great music lined up for a brand new entertainment zone within the stadium.”

Donoghue said there were some exciting acts in the pipeline, which he looked forward to revealing over the next few months.

A special “premier zone” is also being designed to provide some added extras to those fans who want to live the sevens dream.

Donoghue said with the Olympics drawing near, and a number of exciting sevens athletes coming to the forefront of the sport in 2013/14, the upcoming IRB series as a whole would be nothing short of exciting.

“I’ll never forget that moment when the All Blacks Sevens won in Wellington earlier this year either. Having them go on to win the world series was a huge achievement too, and we’re certainly looking forward to having them come back to their home stadium and defend their Wellington title.”
