Experience Wellington Mexican-style

31 Oct 2013

From tequila and tacos to Aztecs and enchiladas, round up your amigos and experience the capital’s Mexican flavour.

La Boca Loca
Enjoy Mexican at La Boca Loca.

Viva Te Papa

A walk-in temple, large ceramic sculpture of the lord of the underworld and more than 200 treasured artefacts collected from museums throughout Mexico are all part of the latest major international exhibition to arrive at Te Papa. Aztecs: Conquest and glory tells the fascinating, dramatic and ultimately tragic story of the Aztec civilisation. This exhibition is hard core history and will immerse you in a complex world of splendour and dark intrigue. Admission charges apply.

Siesta

For a temple to call your own, make the most of CQ Hotels’ accommodation special. You’ll receive one night’s accommodation, a buffet breakfast for two and two tickets to Aztecs: Conquest and glory. Prices start from $175.

Fiesta

Whether blended with ice, served straight, or on the rocks, no Mexican-themed break would be complete without a margarita or two. So, make a meal of it and experience some of the city’s best Mexican haunts:

Pan de Muerto is an authentic Mexican restaurant and specialist tequila bar. Widely known for its friendly atmosphere, dramatic decor and flavoursome food, the restaurant creates traditional Mexican dishes and street food with a modern twist. On your way to the tequila bar, say Hola! to Pedro, Pan de Muerto’s resident skeleton.

Just off Cuba Street, you’ll find Viva Mexico bringing the real tastes of Mexican food to the cultural heart of Wellington. This Left Bank establishment has a laidback vibe, vibrant red and yellow colour scheme, and cool artwork - all creating a buzz that would not feel out of place in downtown Tijuana.

In the capital’s film-making hub of Miramar, you’ll find a shining star in Wellington’s food scene. La Boca Loca combines local and organic ingredients with a focus on freshly made, authentic, Mexico-style food. La Boca Loca’s famous margaritas saw them earn a place in Time Out Melbourne's list of Wellington's Top Five Bars.
