Explore TV to showcase Wellington to over 1 million Aussies

From this weekend Australian travel show Explore TV will air an episode dedicated to Wellington, praising the capital’s “amazing culture…incredible creativity, and the most beautiful food”.

Explore TV airs on Channel Nine nationally as well as the new digital lifestyle channel 9 Life and regional stations in Australia, to an estimated combined viewership of over 1,000,000 across Australia. Presenters Trevor Cochrane and Caty Price spent eight days exploring Wellington's culinary hotspots, natural attractions and cultural highlights last October.

Kale Radics series Producer for Explore TV, says Wellington proved the perfect short break destination for Australians.

“Usually we dedicate an episode to an entire country, and in the past we’ve travelled across New Zealand for this TV series but in this case we had just as much of a challenge packing all the incredible activities from just the one region! As the show highlights, Wellington's fantastic breadth of activities and its proximity make it an inspiring, easy and great value destination for Australians. We left the country with two questions; why haven’t we been here before and how can we get back to cover the rest of the region in the future?”

Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) hosted the Explore TV team in Wellington, helping put together a programme of activities that would highlight some of the best of Wellington’s visitor experiences.

WREDA Chief Executive Chris Whelan says the timing of Explore TV’s Wellington episode was ideal.

“Our tourism team regularly host international travel media, whose reach and credibility is of huge value in sharing the story of Wellington as a destination. At a time of year when people are known to begin planning their next holiday, it’s ideal to be profiling Wellington to Explore TV’s Australian audience.”

The episode also showcases the World of WearableArt™ Awards Show ahead of the launch of ticket sales in February, as well as follows on from the recent Inspired by Wellington campaign run in partnership with Tourism New Zealand.

The Explore TV team also visited Wairarapa vineyard region, with host Trevor Cochrane enjoying a taste of pinot noir at the Te Kairanga winery with Chief Winemaker John Kavanagh;

“Trevor was a great bloke, and genuinely enthusiastic about Wellington, even when the cameras weren’t rolling. I think they were all excited to discover that you could have a boutique wine region experience as part of an short break in a city. We have a lot of Aussies come through for a tasting, and they often comment on how great it is to get the best of both worlds!”

According to the latest Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment estimates, spending by Australian visitors in the Wellington region was worth  over $175 million in the year ending March 2015. This equates to just over a third of all international tourism spend in the region.

Direct arrivals of Australian visitors via Welllington Airport increased by 9% in the year to October 2015, helped by the establishment of new air services from Melbourne and the Gold Coast.
