Wellington's popular Christmas calendar returns

1 Dec 2013

Positively Wellington Tourism (PWT) is spreading Christmas joy again this December with its annual KNOW Wellington Christmas campaign.

Following on from last year’s digital Christmas cracker, PWT has launched The Wondrous Wellington Advent Calendar – the third of its kind since 2010.

PWT Chief Executive, David Perks, says the organisation received a Santa sack full of positive feedback following previous advent calendars so decided to bring it back – but with a couple of new additions.

"This year, we’re sharing the surprises and good times with locals and visitors alike. All New Zealanders are welcome to enjoy some Wellington treats this festive season."

Just like its chocolate relative, each day in the lead up to Christmas, a Wellington treat will be revealed.

“The 2013 design is more interactive, with users able to scroll through a Wellington landscape, hunting for each date’s voucher among the local landmarks.

“A total of 24 vouchers ranging from two for one treats, discounted offers and exclusive deals from some of Wellington’s best businesses are on offer. We’ve also included some great accommodation deals and gastronomic good times well-suited to our friends from out-of-town.”

He says the redemption period for the vouchers has been extended until the end of January to allow for visitors to make the most of their time in the capital when visiting during the holiday season.

Local illustrator, Stephen Templer, created the picturesque Wellington scene which reflects a capital Christmas and includes a number of the city’s most recognised and loved landmarks on a summer’s day.

"We went out to our Facebook audience and asked them what icons they thought we should incorporate into the illustration. We have a very active and passionate social community."

Mr Perks says “aside from rewarding those that have been good to Wellington this year, the aim of the Christmas campaign is to increase downtown foot traffic, while promoting our partner businesses and extending our digital reach.”

The 2011 Wondrous Wellington Advent Calendar received over 150,000 visits with more than 56,000 vouchers distributed. The advent calendar received close to 7,000 shares on social media and generated 8,400 sign ups to the KNOW Wellington eNews.
