Wellington Launches New Weekend Car Parking Campaign

13 June 2007

Positively Wellington Tourism and Wilson Parking have just launched a new campaign, designed to help bring more people to downtown Wellington during weekends.

The campaign, called Weekend Parking for Those in the KNOW, provides a solution to longer-period weekend parking. People can park in one of eight designated Wilson’s car parking buildings for up to six hours during weekends, and pay no more than $3.

“The campaign really complements Wellington City Council’s free weekend parking offer, which is perfect for people making a short trip to town,” says Tim Cossar, CEO of Positively Wellington Tourism. “Weekend Parking for Those in the KNOW gives people access to a further 2,500 downtown car parks at a really great rate. It will appeal to those wanting to park their car for several hours, and go about their weekend shopping.”

The campaign aims to increase the number of people visiting downtown Wellington by between 1,000 and 1,500 each weekend. Mayor Kerry Prendergast says the campaign will play an important role in maintaining Wellington’s competitive advantage as a dynamic, vibrant, cosmopolitan city.

“Wellington is a compact, dynamic little city which is easily accessible and attractive to Wellingtonians and visitors. This campaign is all about making it even easier to shop, café hop and indulge in the downtown area’s arts and cultural scene, during weekends. That has to be good for Wellington.”

Positively Wellington Tourism is contributing to the marketing of the campaign, while Wilson Parking is providing the buildings and has come up with the special rate.

“It’s great to be involved in an innovative campaign like this, which benefits Wellingtonians,” says Stephan Wuffli, National Development Manager for Wilson Parking. “It’s a win win situation. This is a very attractive deal, which we believe will encourage more people to use our downtown car parks during weekends.”

Designated Wilson Parking buildings are: Stout Street, Midland Park/Vodafone on the Quay, James Cook, HP Tower, Grand Plimmer Tower, Frank Kitts Park, Bute/Garret Street and Tory Street.

The campaign falls within Positively Wellington Tourism’s KNOW campaign, which keeps Wellingtonians informed about what’s happening in the downtown area. Research shows there are some perceived barriers to parking in the central city. While there are plenty of car parks available, many people are simply unaware of them.

“This campaign is all about making car parking as affordable and easy to find as a cup of coffee,” says Tim Cossar. “Our research shows that people are willing to pay even more than $3 for a weekend parking offer of this nature, so this is a really great deal.”
