The Awards Keep Rollin' In

Wellington’s accommodation sector frequently makes the headlines, as it grabs prestigious awards. Congratulations to InterContinental Wellington and YHA Wellington City, which have both scooped some top prizes.

YHA’s Wellington City Hostel has been named Oceania’s top backpacker hostel for the second year running, in the 6th Annual ‘Hoscar’ Awards held by international backpacking website Hostelworld.com. More than 600,000 backpackers voted in the global survey. The winning hostels were selected from over 15,000 listed on the online booking website.

“What is so satisfying about winning this particular award is that it is based purely on guest ratings,” says Daniel Shields, Manager, Marketing and Sales for YHA New Zealand. “To win the award two years in a row shows we continue to delight our guests. And in such a competitive market winning means we’re actually a better hostel than we were a year ago.”

Across town in the hotel side of the sector, InterContinental Wellington is also celebrating its recent success. The hotel has just been announced as being one of the Top 10 Best Value Hotels for Australia, New Zealand and The South Pacific in the 2008 Best Values Awards.

The annual international Awards are made by world-renowned American travel writer Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel magazine in conjunction with Trip Advisor, an internet resource for travel reviews.

InterContinental Wellington's general manager David Shackleton said his team was delighted when they were advised of their selection, and it was an accolade that belonged to all of them.

"This is a beautiful hotel with a winning combination of good design, superb location, a broad range of facilities and a long and happy relationship with the community in which it is situated," says David.
