Wellington Zoo Starts 2012 With a Bang

Wellington Zoo has started 2012 with a bang - with record visitation of more than 31,000 in January.

This is hot on the heels of a fantastic and recording breaking year in 2011 where more than  203,000 people visited the best little zoo in the world.

"In 2011 we had our highest attendance ever and we are so excited to see this trend continuing into the New Year," said Wellington Zoo Chief Executive Karen Fifield.

"We are so grateful to our visitors, fans and partners; their support enables us to continue to provide high quality human care for all of our amazing animals.

"We are humbled by the support shown to us by our community, without their support we would not have been able to care for 942 native wildlife patients including kiwi, kakapo, a young  seal and a lost Emperor penguin.

"We are looking forward to welcoming many more visitors to Wellington Zoo this year and we have some exciting community conservation projects and Zoo events coming up in the next few months that we hope Wellingtonians will really get behind."

Wellington Zoo will be running its popular adults only Valentine's Night event on the 14th February, followed by Children's Day on the 4th of March, where entry for kids aged under 14 years of age is just $1.

Construction on the new Asia Precinct at Wellington Zoo, which includes the ASB Malayan Sunbears exhibit and the Pub Charity Sumatran tigers starts later this month. The precinct is due to open in September.
