This historic theatre originally built in 1926 was restored to host the Australasian premieres of two of The Lord of the Rings films - The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.
It then hosted the world premiere and final film of the trilogy, The Return of the King, on 1 December 2003, with the films stars – such as Elijah Wood, Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen and Liv Tyler – in attendance.
The New Zealand premiere of The Lovely Bones in December 2009 saw Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon and Oscar-nominee Saoirse Ronan among those walking the red carpet along Courtenay Place.
It's also where the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was held on 28 November 2012: view our photos of the red carpet celebration.
The theatre has seats in the name of a number of stars, including Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood. Sir Peter Jackson tends to sit in one of those bearing the name of his parents, Bill and Joan Jackson.
