Mount Victoria Lookout is one of the city’s most popular sites, offering panoramic views across the city.
This popular area of the capital city’s green belt has doubled as a rural hobbit shire, twice being used as a location in Sir Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The very first footage of the project – the "Get off the road” scene - was shot off Alexandra Road on 11 October 1999. The "Escape from the Nazgûl" scenes were filmed a few hundred metres to the north. An old quarry at the top end of Ellice Street was later used as the Rohirrim camp at Dunharrow.
The Fever Hospital at 140 Alexandra Road – used for The Lovely Bones - was a popular filming location before being handed over to the SPCA for use as an animal shelter.
