This beautifully revamped cinema in Miramar merges the style of the art deco era with top-of-the-line cinema technology.
The cinema was brought back to life by a collective of Wellington's Oscar-winning moviemakers and hospitality stars, including Weta Workshop’s Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger, Jamie and Ann Selkirk, Valentina Dias and Jonny McKenzie, whose brother Bret – of Flight of the Conchords fame – was given the fan-created name of Figwit after appearing as an unnamed elf extra in The Lord of the Rings. The name Figwit is an acronym for ‘Frodo is Great…Who is That?!!’.
As well its theatres, Roxy Cinema is home to CoCo restaurant and bar.
In 2013, the Roxy Cinema was awarded ‘Best Cinema in New Zealand’ by the Australian Independent Distributors’ Association (AIDA).
