Wellington is a city where the magic of movie-making comes to life.
It was the main filming and production location for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, shot in New Zealand between October 1999 and December 2000. Principal photography for The Hobbit trilogy began in Wellington in March 2011, with Peter Jackson and his team creating Middle-earth magic from their base in the Wellington film-making hub of Miramar.
While much of Wellington’s role lies in production studios and digital effects, there are a number of ways visitors can experience the city’s world class film industry. Expert tour operators such as Wellington Rover Tours, Wellington Movie Tours and Flat Earth New Zealand take visitors to filming locations, explaining and showing scenes that were filmed there; you might even find yourself be guided by an extra from one of the films.
