Urban Nature Itinerary

A unique feature of Wellington is its closeness to nature. Less than 10 minutes drive from downtown Wellington, you’ll find breathtaking nature spots – ZEALANDIA: The Karori Sanctuary Experience, and Wellington’s rugged South Coast, amongst others.

Day 1

  • Visit ZEALANDIA, a world first conservation attraction and home to some of New Zealand’s rarest and most endangered wildlife.
  • Have lunch at one of Wellington’s favourite cafés.
  • Embark on a Seal Coast Safari, a 4WD way of exploring Wellington’s nature and New Zealand’s native fur seals.
  • Check out Cuba Street and Courtenay Place for dinner and drinks and enjoy the vibrant nightlife!

Day 2

  • Take the Wellington Cable Car to the Botanic Gardens and visit New Zealand's place for space, the Carter Observatory.
  • Take a drive out to the Kapiti Coast and visit Kapiti Island Alive, a unique opportunity in New Zealand to view endangered and rare birds in a completely natural setting.

OR

  • Take a drive to Upper Hutt and visit the Staglands Wildlife Reserve, a special look at New Zealand’s natural heritage.

OR

  • If you prefer to stay in the city, check out the Wellington Zoo which also offers personal encounters with the animals such as the red pandas, tigers, lions, giraffes and cheetahs.
  • Visit the Wellington Botanic Garden with its beautiful Lady Norwood Rose Garden.
  • Or take a walk in the Otari-Wilton’s Bush, New Zealand’s only botanic garden dedicated solely to growing native plants.

If you have more time, be sure to:

  • Take a Dominion Post Ferry to the Matiu Somes Island and wander amidst native plant and birdlife in what was formerly a Prisoner of War Camp and quarantine station.
  • Try and spot a kiwi on the ZEALANDIA by Night tour at ZEALANDIA.
  • Explore Wellington via one or more of the major walkways that cover the capital, from the inner city to the coast.
  • Spend a full day with Flat Earth on their Wild Wellington tour.
