Get up close and personal with New Zealand's native treasures and endangered exotic animals for a gold coin donation this Wellington Open Day, Sunday 26 May.
Make your personal connection with nature at Wellington Zoo. Home to New Zealand’s native treasures and endangered exotic animals, you can get up close and personal with wildlife at the Zoo!
Wellington Zoo's latest exhibit, Hero HQ is now open! Home to Tarantulas, Scorpions, Goliath Stick Insects and Chameleons and more, Hero HQ is your chance to marvel at the zoo's new super heroes and learn about the special powers of nature’s most misunderstood creatures.
Get closer than ever to two of Wellington Zoo’s wildest animals. This stunning new space means you can get right up close and personal with the ASB Malayan Sun Bears and the Pub Charity Sumatran Tigers.
Wellington Zoo’s animal hospital and centre for native wildlife helps to improve the lives of animals here at the Zoo, around Wellington and beyond. Each of the facility’s main surgical rooms features a viewing gallery, offering a unique first-hand glimpse of the veterinary team delivering first-class animal care using state-of-the-art equipment. With daily procedures, you can watch and ask questions as the veterinary team work! Find out more.
Visitors to Wellington Zoo have the opportunity to see a Kiwi up close every day. At 2pm each day at The Twilight Te Ao Māhina, Tahi the one-legged Kiwi will be on display with a Zoo Ranger to answer your questions. Tahi is a great advocate for his species – he lost his leg after it was caught in a hunting trap in the bush. Despite the vets’ best efforts, it was unable to be saved, so his leg was amputated just below the knee joint.
Looking for a truly unique animal experience? Then roll up your sleeves and prepare to meet some of Wellington Zoo’s most vivacious, loveable and quirky creatures.
Close Encounters bring animals and people together—choose from a Meerkat, Big Cat, Cheetah or Red Panda Close Encounter. During your encounter Zoo keepers will tell you about the animal’s personality, history and place in the world.
10% of all proceeds from Close Encounters go towards conservation projects administered through the Wellington Zoo Conservation Fund. You can book your Close Encounter online, by phone on 04 389 3692, or email zooevents@wellingtonzoo.com for more information.
Spend a wild night at Wellington Zoo and wake up to the call of the gibbons and roar of the lions.
This special after-hours animal adventure is ideal for school and youth groups—our guests love to bunk down for the night after supper and a special behind the scenes tour. Groups enjoy another tour in the morning before the Zoo is open when the animals are waking up for the day.
Sleepovers cost $35 per person, with a minimum group size of 25 people. To find out more information and to make a booking visit the website, call 381 6758 or email zooevents@wellingtonzoo.com.
