Most of the productions staged each year are Downstage's own, though the theatre also programmes work from visiting companies. The theatre presents a fresh and stimulating mix of New Zealand plays, innovative classics and international favourites.

Downstage also occasionally provides a platform for contemporary New Zealand dance. The auditorium seating is flexible allowing both tiered seating in various formats or the more intimate layout of cabaret style tables and chairs, depending on each show's design. Capacity is around 250. Hosting of groups is a popular option with corporate organisations and for fundraisers, with the Downstage administration providing event management for such occasions.
