This popular museum will take you back a thousand years and lead you to a vibrant present day Wellington. The interactive and exciting exhibitions engage visitors of all ages.
Housed in a significant heritage building on the waterfront, the museum offers a wonderful insight into the rich social and cultural history of Wellington, complementing Te Papa's stories of the nation.
Traditional museum techniques combine with holographic special effects, recreations and interactive exhibits to take you on a journey through Wellington's past, present and future. A favourite with all visitors is ‘A Millennium Ago’, a dramatic 12 minute installation that uses holographic effects to tell Maori creation legends.
There is always something new to see at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea. Changing feature exhibitions delve into social, cultural or maritime stories from Wellington and beyond, with supporting events, performances and talks on throughout the year.
Explore the Museum and beyond – take a SHIP ‘N CHIP Tour to discover Māori creation legends in the city’s history storehouse. Enjoy some quintessential Kiwi fish ‘n chips as you ride the ferry across Wellington Harbour, then roam the natural conservation environment of Matiu/Somes Island. There you will discover the island’s biodiversity of plants and wildlife, including kakariki, weta, fantails, skinks and, if you are lucky, even tuatara.
