History in the making

Wellington’s the place where New Zealand’s stories come together. Home to Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand, this interactive and extraordinary museum tells those stories of New Zealand’s rich cultural history. Carter Observatory tells the stories of New Zealand’s skies and ZEALANDIA tells the story of New Zealand’s natural history.

You can also check out New Zealand’s parliament and get inside the walls of the famous Beehive – take a free tour and see history as it a happens!

Not only are we the place where modern history is made, Wellington was one of the first places pioneers came to settle, back in the day. We are lucky enough to still have some amazing architecture that represents those bygone days, such as the Colonial Cottage Museum (which also happens to be Wellington’s oldest original cottage), famous writer Katherine Mansfield’s Birthplace and the oldest suburb in New Zealand, Thorndon, which is now full of gorgeous boutiques and quaint cafes.
