Self Guided Walks - Wellington City Walks

Listed below are some walking routes in downtown Wellington.

Waterfront Walk (1 hour)

This walk begins at the Post Office Square opposite Queens Wharf, and works its way along the waterfront to Te Papa. It takes in many of the buildings used in early Wellington wharfing. Monuments to special events in Wellington are marked out along the way as you head towards Civic Square.

Civic Square is home to the City Library, City Gallery, Wellington i-SITE Visitor Centre and the Town Hall Complex. Walk back over the bridge past the Boatshed to Te Papa.

To add to the walk, stroll past Te Papa to Waitangi Park, past Port Nicholson Marina, and onto Oriental Parade, where the streetscape is among New Zealand's finest. Find a café and have a well-earned rest over a great local coffee, while you gaze back across the water to the city.

Wellington Writers Walk (1 hour)

This walk consists of a series of 15 text sculptures located along Wellington’s beautiful harbour. Each one contains a quotation about the city from a poem or piece of prose by one of the many talented writers who have made Wellington their home at some point in their lives.

Thorndon Heritage Walk (2-3 hours)

This walk takes you from New Zealand's busiest Railway Station, through the hub of New Zealand's Central Government precinct to historic Thorndon and some of Wellington's oldest surviving houses.
Starting from Wellington Railway Station, this walk takes you through the heart of power in New Zealand, both present and past. You will take in Embassies, Cathedrals and Parliament old and new.

You can add to this walk with a detour to Katherine Mansfield's birthplace.
