Self Guided Walks- Nature Walks

Wellington and its surrounding regions have the largest range of natural heritage attractions in the country. It offers visitors an insight into New Zealand's efforts to actively protect and nurture endangered species of both plant and animal life. 

  • Karori Sanctuary
    Beautiful 250 acre valley set around Karori Reservoir, currently being restored to its natural environment. An idyllic haven, it offers several guided walks through native flora, past Karori's two historic reservoirs. 
  • Kapiti Island
    Forty-five minutes drive north from the city, Kapiti Island is New Zealand's premier nature and marine reserve protecting some of the world's most endangered bird species and marine life. Access to the island is by booking through the Wellington Department of Conservation.
  • Wellington Botanic Garden
    Wellington Botanic Garden has 26 hectares of specialist garden, native bush and lawns on Wellington city's doorstep. The Education and Environment Centre, combined with the World Wide Fund for Nature is located in the "Treehouse". The Lady Norwood Rose Garden is an ideal picnic spot and the large adventure playground is perfect for children.
  • Otari-Wilton's Bush
    This famous garden of native flora was developed from an original piece of bushland. There are several options, from a gentle walk to a more challenging route. This reserve has perhaps the best collection of indigenous flora in the country.
  • Matiu-Somes Island
    Set in the middle of Wellington's stunning harbour, the island is where visitors can trace extraordinary history amongst native plant and birdlife, surrounded by 360° views of the harbour. Access to the island is aboard the Dominion Post Ferry.
  • Makara Track
    Makara Track is located 35 minutes drive from downtown Wellington. Cliff top walk above Makara Beach with spectacular views of the Cook Strait, Tasman Sea, Kaikoura Ranges and Mana and Kapiti Islands. This track climbs past an ancient Maori pa site and the remains of World War II gun emplacements.
  • Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre
    Situated in the Wairarapa, Pukaha Mount Bruce is just under 2 hours’ drive from the city. It offers a unique opportunity to see examples of New Zealand's threatened and endangered wildlife and to learn more about wildlife conservation.
