Situated in the centre of New Zealand, Wellington is served by major highways, the main trunk railway, inter-island ferries, and regular international and domestic air services.

By plane

Air NZ plane

Wellington is less than one hour’s flight from New Zealand's main cities, and Wellington International Airport is just 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre. Three airlines - Air New Zealand, Qantas and Pacific Blue - fly directly from Australia and there are frequent domestic flights. Taxis, shuttles and the Airport Flyer – a state-of-the-art bus service featuring leather seats and free Wi-Fi – offer easy transfers into the city.

By train or bus

National bus and train services arrive and depart from Wellington Railway Station which is located in the city centre.

Kiwi Rail operates a popular train service - The Northern Explorer - between Auckland and Wellington, connecting Wellington with most major North Island cities. The journey takes around 10 hours and takes you through some of the most stunning parts of the North Island.

By ferry

Interislander ferry

Wellington is the North Island's coastal gateway to the South Island, with regular ferry services taking passengers and vehicles across the Cook Strait. The stunning journey through Wellington Harbour and the Marlborough Sounds takes 3 hours. The main ferry services are provided by Bluebridge and Interislander.  Search all Ferry Services

By cruise ship

Wellington is also a popular stop for cruise ships and the Aotea Quay Terminal is the main dock. It's around 8 minutes in a taxi or shuttle to reach the city centre, downtown shopping area, Banks and Post Offices. Read more information on coming to Wellington on a Cruise ship.
