Film support

If you are considering filming in Wellington, you’ve come to the right place

LED screens at Avalon studios

Wellington is home to world-class movie-making talent, facilities and technology and WellingtonNZ works hard behind the scenes to support the industry that has put the Capital on the map.

From unique locations within easy reach and access to award winning crews, to street closures, permits and permissions, the production process is seamless in a city that lives and breathes screen.

WellingtonNZ works alongside industry, community groups and educators to introduce programmes and support existing initiatives to ensure Wellington is, and remains, the best place in Aotearoa to watch, make and learn about movies.

Screen Wellington

WellingtonNZ runs the region’s film office, Screen Wellington, a one-stop shop to make filming in Wellington easy.

If you want film permits, help securing studio space, connections with post-production, VFX and mixing facilities or suggestions on locations, the Screen Wellington team is here to help.

UNESCO City of Film

Wellington was awarded the prestigious title of UNESCO City of Film in 2019, igniting a collaboration with our Creative City colleagues in Aotearoa and around the world to elevate our region’s cinematic storytellers, and to bring an array of cultural screen experiences to the people of Wellington.

Central to Wellington’s UNESCO City of Film strategy is the ambition to increase access to screen experiences and promote diverse voices, among rangatahi (young people), Māori and Pasifika storytellers.

WellingtonNZ is working alongside a variety of stakeholders, partners and community groups to ensure the strategy harnesses our creative talent.
