The 2013 -2014 cruise season will see Wellington welcoming 76 ships carrying an estimated 143,000 passenger and a further 30,000 crew from 7 October 2013- 11 May 2014, our longest season so far. On nine of these days, we will host two ships in port at once!
So far Wellington has seen 23 ships carrying an estimated 52,187 passengers and 14,845 crew since the 7th of October. This included our largest day when we welcomed Voyager of the Seas (3138) and Celebrity Solstice (2850) on the 20th of November as the city was also hosting the All Whites qualifying game against Mexico for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Positively Wellington Tourism (PWT) identified at the end of last season the need to have a staff member looking after all things cruise, primarily our fantastic group of Wellington City Ambassadors (WCA).
Our cruise operations coordinator, Danielle Leonard, was appointed in August 2013 and straight away jumped into recruiting, training and rostering of the 111 WCAs.
Training has been made up of four “speed dating” sessions with operators and has also included guided familiarisations of sights, attractions and activities that shouldn't be missed out on by cruise passengers while in our beautiful city and have included the following:
These new positively bright uniforms have reinvigorated the enthusiastic Wellingtonian’s who graciously give up their free time over the busy summer season helping cruise passengers find their way around the “coolest little cruise capital in the world”.
We have 40 volunteers on their 3rd year, 13 2nd year and 51 brand new WCAs
