Wellington's open-arms approach to cruise ship passengers has been rewarded, with the city being ranked as one of the top stop-offs in Australasia.
The third annual Cruiser's Choice Destination Awards, announced by review site Cruise Critic and based on its member's feedback, placed Wellington in the top five for the first time.
Coming in fourth behind Sydney, Hobart and Akaroa, Wellington knocked previous favourite Milford Sound off the list.
David Perks, WREDA Destination Development and Marketing General Manager, was thrilled with the news that illustrated the hard work put in by staff including volunteers who gave up their time to welcome cruise visitors to the city.
"The Wellington Cruise Ambassadors are an invaluable part of making new arrivals feel welcome in Wellington.
"Their commitment to ensuring those hopping off cruise ships have the best possible time in the capital is obviously paying off."
Wellington's stellar summer was enjoyed by almost 238,000 visitors and crew, an increase of 15 per cent and bringing in an estimated $59 million to the local economy.
