Thanks Wellington – you’ve put NZ back on world maps

25 May 2018

Stop panicking Rhys. New Zealand is back on world maps thanks to Wellington being named the best city in the world to live.

For the second year in a row Wellington has topped the Deutsch Bank Liveable City index which ranks world cities in categories such as purchasing power, safety in the city, health care, cost of living, property to income ration, pollution and climate.

WREDA CEO Lance Walker says some may be surprised that Wellington has topped the table against bigger and arguably better-known cities including Zurich (2nd), Copenhagen (3rd), Edinburgh (4th) and Vienna (5th) but Wellingtonians have long known this is absolutely, positively the world’s best city to live.

“When it comes to lifestyle, Wellington blows other cities away. The city has all the best a big city has to offer – great restaurants, shopping, art, events, markets – but all in a compact area with nature all around us.”

But he warns that work needs to continue to keep Wellington at the head of the pack.

“We’re a city where people want to live and visit. The economy is the strongest it’s been in years and we’ve had a record summer in terms of visitor numbers. It’s important we prepare for growth and continue to be ambitious about ensuring Wellington is a vibrant, well-functioning place with plenty of opportunities for all of its residents.”

Mr Walker says WREDA has a focus to not just facilitate the growth of Wellington’s businesses and economy but to also make the city and region wildly famous around the world as a city brimming with arts, culture and tolerance.

“The city’s latest success in the Deutsch Bank Liveable City index shows we’re on the right path. A great city to live is also a great city to visit so this number one ranking is also a positive for helping us attract tourists as well as international students and talent."

Walker says the best thing about living in Wellington however, is Wellingtonians.

“Wellingtonians truly are at the heart of what makes the city such a welcoming place to live and visit. That collective heartbeat is being increasingly heard globally, and it sits behind the city being ranked the most liveable in the world,” Mr Walker says.’s 10 alternative reasons why Wellington is the World’s best city to live
