The twin-engine, wide-body aircraft operating as SQ247 from Singapore and Melbourne will touch down for the first time in Wellington on Friday (1 November). It will be one of the swiftest – and most stylish ways – for Wellingtonians to connect with the world, and for the world to connect with Wellington.

The A350-900 is not only quieter than its predecessor but also 25% more fuel efficient. It is also the first service out of Wellington to offer Premium Economy alongside Business and standard Economy seating.

WellingtonNZ General Manager Anna Calver says since the Singapore Airlines service began in September 2016, spending in the region from Australia and Asia has grown 7.5% and 32% respectively (MRTEs to August 2019).

“Positive growth has been experienced right across the region, with Australian visitors’ spending up 19.4% in Hutt Valley, 7.3% in Wairarapa and 19.6% in Kapiti Coast.

“Asian visitors’ spend has increased by 53.5% in the Hutt Valley, 19.3% in the Wairarapa and 44.5% in Kapiti Coast.

“Whilst this isn’t all attributable to the Singapore Airlines service, we know historically that increased airline connectivity and competition is the leading factor for visitor growth to Wellington.”

The number of Indian and Singaporean visitors’ arrivals to Wellington in particular has seen strong growth since YE August 2016 – Indian visitor numbers increased by 106% and Singaporean numbers increased by 118%.

From 1 January 2020, Singapore Airlines is boosting the number of flights from four to five times weekly on the Wellington-Singapore route via Melbourne in response to increasing demand for services.
