WellingtonNZ, previously known as the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency was created to bring together the functions and activities previously housed across several council-controlled organisations and offices.
WellingtonNZ was formed in 2015, with the amalgamation of Positively Wellington Tourism, Positively Wellington Venues, Grow Wellington and its subsidiary Creative HQ. The Wellington City Council Major Events function formally joined WellingtonNZ in 2016.
As the Government's Regional Business Partner, Grow Wellington has helped business owners in the Wellington region identify needs and opportunities to grow, linked them with mentoring services, connected relevant businesses with NZTE capability funding, and Callaghan Innovation R&D funding. This includes bringing together industry groups, making business-to-business connections, holding sector-development events, building expertise through workshops and forums, and leading delegations to international markets.
As Wellington's Regional Tourism Organisation, PWT has been responsible for marketing the coolest little capital in the world as a visitor destination. Working in partnership with businesses in the visitor economy, the organisation has delivered creative visitor campaigns, conducted trade marketing and assisted with tourism product development. Other capacities have included digital marketing, the domestic and international media programme, operating the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre and attracting conferences via Business Events Wellington.
Responsible for managing a portfolio of civic-owned venues, PWV facilitated the delivery of hundreds of performance and business events annually. The venues are a collection of conference and performance venues combining heritage and character with state of the art technology. Venues include the TSB Arena & Convention Centre, Michael Fowler Centre, St James Theatre, Wellington Town Hall and Academy Galleries.
Wellington's startup base, Creative HQ, specialises in increasing the number of high-growth businesses that fuel New Zealand's economy, as well as supporting creative businesses by nourishing entrepreneurial talent and driving innovation. Through their incubation and acceleration programmes, they've helped turn big ideas into viable and successful businesses by providing access to the knowledge, networks and capital needed to take a new company global. They also deliver entrepreneur initiatives and innovation services.
