Shopify looks to hire more than 100 support staff with the help of WREDA as part of remote working revolution
Shopify Inc., the leading cloud-based, multi-channel commerce platform, today announced Wellington as its first remote hub in Oceania, with plans to hire more than 100 support employees.
Welcoming the announcement, Wellington Mayor Justin Lester says, “I’m thrilled Shopify has selected Wellington as their first remote hub in Oceania. Their support model, whereby staff can work from home, and their emphasis on a flexible work style is an exciting opportunity for the more than 100 new employees that are planned to be hired over the coming year. Shopify’s investment is a true testament to the talent we have in the city.”
Shopify Wellington plans to hire more than 100 people in the next 12 months, with a start date as early as August 13, 2018. The company is growing quickly and looking for people interested in supporting business development, commerce and entrepreneurship.

Local New Zealand merchants Walker & Hall, Good as Gold, CAUGHLEY, The Brand Outlet, and Mojo Coffee have been using Shopify to power their business for the past few years, along with thousands of other business owners in the country.
"Shopify has been instrumental to getting our business off the ground. It’s accessible for small business owners and robust enough for fast-growing businesses," says Steve Gianoutsos, co-founder of Mojo Coffee. "With Shopify, we were able to customize our website to suit our specific needs and brand, which let us rapidly grow our business to offer an international e-commerce solution, shipping coffee to our local customers and those living abroad."
WREDA chief executive Lance Walker says, “Shopify is an impressive global employer and their investment in Wellington includes plans to hire more than 100 support employees – called Shopify Gurus – within the first year. The workers will work remotely across the entire Wellington region.”
“During WREDA’s discussions with Shopify, they were impressed with Wellington’s accessible geographic footprint, high entrepreneurial spirit, reputation as a tech hub and strong community values. It’s these attributes that played a big role in their decision to open their first Oceania Hub in Wellington. It will give local entrepreneurs and merchants a clear pathway to success with Shopify’s customer support network able to help local entrepreneurs start, set up and scale their businesses,” Walker says.
