Wellington is renowned as an innovative tech city packed with talent. Yet, in order to sustain and support this momentum, we need to ensure we develop the optimal workforce for our future economic landscape. Programmes like Summer of Tech are vital to this.
Wellington's tech industry is steadily growing and continually innovating. New companies are beginning, whilst more established companies like Xero or Silverstripe, are growing and expanding globally.
With an international shortage of mid-senior level tech talent, it is imperative we find ways to attract this talent immediately, as well as nurturing and growing our next generation of talent; who ultimately become our region's future talent in this high-value sector.
The successful LookSee Wellington campaign is addressing an immediate mid-senior level shortage. While Summer of Tech (SoT) is focused on developing and nurturing our existing talent for the long-term.
Summer of Tech is the longest running information and communication technology (ICT) internship programme in New Zealand with an enviable record of success. Since 2006, SoT has facilitated more than 700 paid internships, with an average retention rate of 80% - it works!
Their innovative approach is they are genuinely industry-led, stakeholders are local employers, and they deliver industry-focused training to act as a bridge between NZ tertiary students and NZ tech industry employers; with support of WREDA as a connector and facilitator of economic development.
Last year in Wellington, 118 internships were hosted with an average hourly pay rate of $22. The number of internships would have been higher, had more businesses signed up.
We have just cracked 1700 students seeking internships. There’s no shortage of keen newbies who want a chance to kick start their career in Wellington - Ruth McDavitt, CEO of SoT.
WREDA works hard to foster the next generation of tech stars by supporting initiatives like this, but the onus also falls on local businesses to give them the opportunity to shine. Summer of Tech's retention rate of over 80% graphically illustrates the value the interns provide for employers. We thank those firms that have already taken on this responsibility, and ask others to come on board.
