Wellington City Ambassadors

Each cruise season a team of passionate Wellingtonians welcome thousands of cruise passengers to the ‘coolest little cruise capital in the world’ and they are known as the Wellington City Ambassadors.

Ready to greet the passengers

This team of volunteers are positioned at key locations throughout the city to provide information, directions and to generally assist passengers to ensure they are making the most of their day in Wellington. The upcoming 2017/18 season will see an estimated 90 ships visit the city and we need more ambassadors to join the team.

Our mission is to provide a friendly and informative welcome to all visitors to Wellington.

What we require from you, you may ask?

  • To participate in the programme you must be available from October to April and able to complete a minimum of 8 shifts within this period. Average number of shifts with current WCA team is 10 over the season
  • Shifts are a maximum of 4 hours and are based in different locations throughout the City: CentrePort, Cable Car Lane, Botanic Gardens, Brandon Street, C and the Wellington i-SITE
  • Access to a computer and the internet, to receive important updates and shift allocations.
  • Most importantly the ability to provide a warm welcome, and general local knowledge, to ensure cruise passengers can make the most of their time in Wellington!

What we will provide you…

  • Rosters are managed by the Volunteer & Cruise Operations Executive – initial individual rosters sent between September and October with ongoing adjustments on a daily basis
  • Uniform items will be provided and include a name badge, waterproof jacket, t-shirt and cap which are yours to keep. You will need to provide your own tidy trousers and comfortable footwear that is suited to standing for up to four hours.
  • A one-on-one interview to explain the purpose of your role and our expectations
  • Tourism training and resources such as visitor guides, visits to attractions and access to Wellington touring and information
  • Three formal gatherings throughout the season
  • Opportunity to volunteer for other events being hosted by the city
