Wellington movie making magic
Step into an immersive Wellywood experience with behind the scenes experiences, hands on workshops and explore world class film locations
Day One: A journey of imagination, how movie magic happens.
Step into the world of film-making at Weta Workshop.
Be welcomed by Weta Workshop crew and learn more about the creative journey of how Wellington became known as Wellywood before exploring the workshop and entering a world of creativity, craftsmanship and movie-making magic.
For lunch, head to the nearby Coco at the Roxy located at popular Roxy Cinema in Miramar. The Roxy Cinema is a testament to the creative collaboration between some of Wellington's best architects, builders, film makers, Weta Workshop artisans and designers and a host of talent from within the hospitality industry.
After lunch, head back to the Weta Cave to get stuck into hands-on workshops. Weta Workshop has kitted out countless armies with chainmaille and leather-adorned costumes for films like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. In this hands-on workshop, learn techniques used by our Costume crew as you create your own keyring from leather & chainmaille. Or roll up your sleeves for an introduction to the magic of sculpture and begin to create a fantastical 3D character.
Day Three: Celebrity treatment
Take a short scenic helicopter flight to luxury venue Boomrock for a day of adventure. Perched on a cliff 750 feet above the Tasman Sea and surrounded by 1600 acres of farmland, Boomrock offers a range of outdoors adventures including clay bird shooting, 4WD adventures, hot laps or golf challenges.
Sit down for lunch at the Lodge beside the open fire. Enjoy a meal prepared by head chef Warren Maddox accompanied by local wine wines as you take in the dramatic views looking out to sea.
Once you’re back in the city, head to Spring Spa for a blissful afternoon of massage or beauty treatments.
Smile for the paparazzi and give your autograph as you walk the red carpet in your finery at Embassy Theatre, which has its fair share of red-carpet film premieres including Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit before enjoying an Oscar worthy farewell dinner at one of Wellington’s award-winning eateries or venues.
