Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency Chief Executive Chris Whelan welcomed today’s announcement by Wellington City Council, which opens the way to construction of a combined convention centre and movie museum facility in the city.
“Wellington can now look forward to two brand new major visitor attractions with international appeal. This is a truly exciting development for Wellington’s future.”
“This project will boost both business and leisure visitation, supporting employment across the accommodation, retail and hospitality sectors. The facility also plays to a number of Wellington’s strengths, as a hub of creativity, technological expertise, culture and cuisine.”
Mr Whelan said that the integration of Wellington’s screen industry story would set the facility apart.
“Combining the movie museum and convention centre will give us a facility with a distinctively Wellington identity. This will be a unique, internationally-attractive product to take to the global conference and business events market.”
“Hosting successful international conferences and business events connects Wellington to networks of professionals across a range of industries. This unmistakeably Wellington facility will help us ensure those delegates leave as ambassadors for our region.”
Partnership between civic leadership and Wellington’s film industry heavyweights was a sign of shared confidence in Wellington, Mr Whelan said.
“Our major film-makers have shown exceptional commitment to Wellington for many years, making significant investments in their business here. This latest project reinforces that commitment, and extends their contribution to Wellington’s reputation as a world-leading centre of creative enterprise and expertise.”
Mr Whelan commended Wellington City Council leadership for their commitment to the project.
“This much-needed project builds on Wellington’s legacy of productive infrastructure investment, like Te Papa and Westpac Stadium. As we work towards the ambitious vision of becoming Australasia’s most prosperous, vibrant and liveable city region, this project will help us build that future for Wellington.”
