Wellington is proud to have been named the "Top Cruise Ship Destination in Australia/New Zealand" in 2020 by readers of US-based Porthole magazine, as well as a top-rated destination in the Cruise Critic’s 2018 Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards.

Before the pandemic hit, the 2019/20 cruise season was tracking to be our biggest season ever with 249,000 cruise ship passengers predicted to visit Wellington. While cruise ships have been temporarily banned from entering New Zealand waters, we look forward to welcoming them back when the time is right.

This page will be updated with relevant information when cruise ships return to Wellington.

The cruise opportunity

Cruise passengers have just a few hours in Wellington - usually from 8am to 6pm - to explore and experience the attractions, shopping and culture.

To make the most out of the cruise opportunity and build our reputation as a cruise-friendly destination, it's important that Wellington is prepared for these visitors.

For arrival and departure times, as well as number of passengers for each ship, be sure to check out the full schedule of ships coming into Wellington port.

The New Zealand Cruise Association provides detailed information on ship size and style, as well as passenger and crew numbers.

CentrePort Wellington provides cruise timetables and information specific to Wellington. It has well-established processes for working with cruise ships and only allows accredited tour companies to collect passengers directly from the berth.

When cruise ships return to the city, WellingtonNZ can support local businesses interested in working with them.

Wellington City Ambassadors

Each cruise season a team of passionate Wellingtonians welcome thousands of cruise passengers to the ‘coolest little cruise capital in the world’ and they are known as the Wellington City Ambassadors.

This team of volunteers are positioned at key locations throughout the city to provide information, directions and a friendly welcome to Wellington.

The City Ambassadors are managed by the Wellington i-SITE, so speak to the team about how your business can be involved.
